Fix Deadlock Skin Mods After a Patch

After most Deadlock patches, the game rewrites gameinfo.gi and stops loading mods from citadel/addons. Restore that path, then check the other causes in order.

If your Deadlock skins worked yesterday and stopped today, the likely cause is a game update that rewrote gameinfo.gi and removed the line that loads your mods.

Most patches can reset that file without touching your mods, so any player can run into the same problem.

gameinfo.gi resets after a patch

Deadlock decides which folders to load content from using a file called gameinfo.gi. Mods live in an addons folder, and the game only looks there if gameinfo.gi says to.

A patch frequently replaces gameinfo.gi with a fresh copy from Valve. The replacement drops the path to your addons folder, so the game ignores mod files that are still on disk.

Repair the path. In gameinfo.gi, check that the search paths block includes an entry for citadel/addons. The community Deadlock Mod Manager can usually restore it, and it is less error prone than editing the file by hand.

If you edit gameinfo.gi manually, save a working copy somewhere safe. After the next patch, compare the new file with that copy and restore the entry if needed.

Other causes of missing skins

If skins still do not appear after you confirm the path, work through these checks in order:

  1. Confirm the mod files are present. Check that the files are still in the addons folder.
  2. Check for recent Steam verification. If you verified game files recently, Steam removes anything it does not recognise, including mods.
  3. Check for a conflict. Two mods replacing the same model do not stack, and the winner is not always predictable. Remove all but one, then reintroduce the others individually.
  4. Check the hero model version. A mod built against an older version of a hero model can silently fail after a rework. Start with mods for heroes changed in a recent patch.
  5. Restart the whole client. Close Deadlock completely, not just the match. Content paths are read at startup.

Patches can reset file-based mods

Deadlock has no supported mod API, so community mods rely on files placed where the engine looks for them. Any patch that touches engine configuration can undo that setup, so expect to restore the path after some updates.
