Are Deadlock Skin Mods Bannable?

Deadlock skin mods are client-side files. Here is what is actually known about bans, what Valve has and has not said, and how to reduce your risk.

There are no confirmed bans for client-side cosmetic mods in Deadlock. Valve has published no policy allowing or forbidding them. Anyone claiming certainty is guessing.

Forum answers conflict. The known facts still separate cleanly from the unanswered policy question.

What the mod changes on your machine

A Deadlock skin mod replaces model and texture files on your own machine. It is client-side, which means:

That last point carries the most weight. Anti-cheat systems look for code that reads or writes game memory, whereas a cosmetic mod is a file sitting in the addons folder.

What Valve has said about Deadlock mods

Valve has not published anything specific to cosmetic mods in Deadlock. There is no policy page or patch note about them. The development team has not said whether they are allowed or prohibited.

Deadlock is still an invite-only playtest. Valve has generally been tolerant of client-side cosmetic modification in its other games, and the Deadlock modding community has operated openly for a long time without a wave of reported bans.

That history describes enforcement so far, not permission from Valve, and Valve can change its enforcement in any patch.

When a mod stops being cosmetic

The risk usually comes from what the mod changes or what it asks you to run.

Keeping a mod within the cosmetic boundary

If you install a mod, use these limits to keep it cosmetic:

  1. Stick to cosmetic replacements only: models, textures, and sounds.
  2. Use the community Deadlock Mod Manager, or place files manually. Record exactly what lands where either way.
  3. Leave out anything that changes what you can see of other players.
  4. Keep a note of what you installed. If Valve publishes a policy, you can then remove those files quickly.

If you cannot accept mod-related risk on a playtest account, leaving mods uninstalled is the only zero-risk option.
